Asphalt Paving
Asphalt paving brings with it a range of great advantages. It’s an extremely cost-effective choice for paving for a range of reasons. First, it’s relatively cheap. Your initial investment is generally quite low if you go with asphalt. Second, maintenance is straightforward. It’s easy to maintain with regular sealcoating and, provided you get to them early, most problems can be repaired without requiring a full replacement.
Asphalt Repair and Concrete Repair
Although tough and durable, concrete and asphalt can still require repair from time to time. Water, in particular, can be very damaging to both concrete and asphalt. Another significant cause of deterioration is heavy vehicle traffic or impact damage, say from falling heavy equipment. When you are looking at damage, be it in the form of cracks, subsidence, crumbling or potholes, our paving contractors can provide a full solution. The key to our success is we always address the underlying issue first. That way your fix is more than cosmetic and you can have confidence it’ll last.
Asphalt Sealcoating
Sealcoating is the simple of process of applying a special coat over your asphalt surface. This coat then soaks into the surface, filling in all the cracks and holes that have started to develop as part of the natural wear and tear. This prevents the cracks and holes from becoming any worse, or developing any further. It’s a simple, quick and cost effective way to protect your investment. We generally recommend you sealcoat your asphalt surfaces every two years or so.
Concrete Paving
Concrete is commonly known to be seriously tough. Being tough and durable also means lower repair and replacement costs, along with fewer maintenance hassles. It can also look great, especially when stamped or colored to produce an eye-catching finish. We also offer a range of textured finishes which yield the additional benefit of providing a safe, high-traction walking surface. It’s ideal for walkways around your home, especially if you get a lot of snow or rain.
Commercial Paving Services
Paving is one of those small things that can have a big impact on your business. Consider your parking lot as an example. If it seamlessly meets all your needs, and is well maintained, it can have a positive impact on your business, making it easy for people and clients to enter and leave your premises, encouraging more people to visit. Easy access is good for business. Our range of commercial paving services are effective, efficient and professional. We do quality work and get the job done fast, meaning less business disruption for you.
Driveway Paving
We offer concrete and asphalt driveway paving, driveway installation and driveway repair. Our repair services include small issues like cracks or slab drifting to larger issues like potholes, subsidence or crumbling. Sugar Land, TX & The Story of One of the Cheapest Hero Movies Ever Made
Sugar Land is a typical master planned community; one of many you’ll find speckled throughout Texas. It’s dotted with all the white-collar perks of middle-class affluence you’d expect of such a place. Sugar Land is a place of suburban conformity, but in a good way. It’s a cozy place to live. In fact, the town is listed as one of the 100 most desirable places to live in the US.
But Sugar Land has an oddly quirky claim to fame which doesn’t quite fit this comfortably luxurious stereotype. It happens to be home to one of the weirdest tributes to a town ever made — a lovingly crafted movie entitled The Legend of Action Man.
What Makes ‘The Legend of Action Man’ Stand Out?
Hero movies are pretty thick on the ground in 2019. It seems like two out of three movies involve some gleaming do-gooder on a quest to save the world from a powerful yet misguided nasty person. They tend to have budgets up in the hundreds of millions and to be star-filled affairs. They’re what movie pundits breathlessly define as “Big Hollywood Blockbusters.”
The Legend of Action Man was made in 2010. Back then, hero movies were a thing to be sure. But there was still space for the little guys — and this movie sure was really little with a total budget of around 200 bucks. Basically, the cost of gas and snacks for a weekend road trip.
The three producers (Andy Young, Derek Papa and Jamie McEnelly) were all Sugar Land residents and classmates taking broadcasting classes together at high school. Together, with their combined kitty of a few hundred bucks and a school-borrowed camera, they decided to buck a trend.
The plot line is simple and unambitious, but it hits all the hero trope beats, albeit in its own quirky way. In the quiet suburban town of Sugar Land, one lone hero puts his life on the line to keep his neighbors safe from a threat which isn’t quite as real or significant as our hero would hope. He makes some mistakes (lots of them in fact) but in the end through a series of misadventures and a dash of good luck, he finds a real villain. Whether he “saves” Sugar Land I’ll leave to you to find out!
A Hero Movie in Sugar Land?
Which begs the question. Why Sugar Land?
These days, we all know the drill with hero movies. There tends to be three required elements to make them work. Big characters, the future of the world at stake … and a kickass cool setting. From Wakanda to Gotham, the accepted rule is that you need to have a big, larger than life backdrop to contain such gigantic characters and world-busting themes.
But Young, Papa and McEnelly took their movie in a different direction. The Legend of Action Man is set entirely in Sugar Land. Even more beautifully subversive, they celebrate that fact.
Rather than opting to shoot their scenes in nondescript back streets, they made a movie which is a tribute to the cultural life of Sugar Land. Every major landmark finds its way into the movie’s storyline: from Sugar Land Town Square to its most recognizable city street corners and parks.
It’s a film made by Sugar Land locals for Sugar Land locals.
And it works!
Instead of dooming the story to sink into a mire of suburban beige malaise, it somehow elevates it. Paradoxically, its ostensibly uninspiring setting makes the story fun and fresh. In a sea of lycra clad muscles and capes, The Legend of Action Man stands alone as a hero movie with something refreshingly “smalltown” to offer.
What Does it All Mean?
Well, not much really, I suppose. But at the very least, it’s a win for the little guy. More than that though, it’s cool to see a ridiculously cheap, tongue in cheek tribute to a small place in a genre usually reserved for expensive, earnest, high blown stories in gigantic settings.
It’s also a cool story about a town most people … well… let’s be honest … kind of overlook. Sugar Land is a beautiful, comfortably suburban testament to planned living. But unless you live there, you’re unlikely to care much about its bustling town center, or all the parks, restaurants and tucked away corners that Sugar Land locals actually do care about.
The Legend of Action Man is based around one of the boldest creative decisions you can make: the unapologetic pursuit of authenticity. Oddly enough, in its pursuit of smallness it makes a name for itself. It’s a little fish in a big pond, but that’s cool and nothing to shy away from.
